Day 2 – River Kayaking & Horseback Riding (B/L):
Hotel check-out and embark on 1 hour drive via the Western Highway to Caves Branch Outpost, your adventure headquarters. First, climb aboard a 2-man kayak to begin your exploration of the Caves Branch River system. You may sneak up on basking iguanas, see howler monkeys or turtles and view a wide variety of exotic birds. The karst formations are breath-taking. Next, saddle up and explore pristine rainforests. Ride along the Caves Branch River to “Hell’s gate” a scenic waterfall. Then follow the trails through the forest and across small creeks. The vegetation is lush with an abundance of orchids and bromeliads. Wildlife sightings are fairly common and lots of birds can be spotted. Then rejuvenate with a tasty lunch and cooling beverage at “Canopy Café” at Caves Branch Outpost. Next, continue your journey to Western Belize where your next 2 nights will be spent at Pook’s Hill Lodge. This is a small family run lodge clustered around a restored Maya residential site in the heart of a 300 acre private rainforest reserve that serves as a buffer to the 7,000 acre Tapir Mountain Reserve.
Day 3 – Actun Tunichil Muknal (L):
Actun Tunichil Muknal "Cave of the Stone Sepulcher" is one of the most impressive caves in the Maya lowland. This cave was a sacred place to the prehistoric Maya of Belize, who first began to use the entrance during the early classic period (300-600 A.D.). It was not until the late terminal classic period (700-900 A.D.) that the Mayas travelled deeper into the cave to conduct their ceremonies. The cave system consists of a series of chambers, ending in a 300 by 50 meter cathedral where sacrificial ceremonies once took place. Here you will be exposed to the individuals sacrificed to the gods of the underworld. Visitors to this cave have the unique opportunity to travel into the Maya past and witness a living museum where the human sacrifices and artifacts can be viewed in their original context.
This is a full day of physical activity; participants will need to trek across jungles, wade thru streams and rivers, and climb over boulders! A high level of fitness with no physical limitations is recommended.
Day 4 – Leisure morning at Pook’s Hill Lodge – Afternoon tour to Xunantunich (L):
Leisure morning to enjoy complimentary amenities at Pook’s Hill Lodge including: Early morning birding, guided walks in old-growth forest and flood-plain jungle habitats, tubing on the Roaring River, swimming in natural swimming pools, and night walks in the bush.
Enjoy a tasty lunch at Pook’s Hill Lodge.
Day 4 – Leisure morning at Pook’s Hill Lodge – Afternoon tour to Xunantunich (L) (Continuation):
Hotel check-out and drive via the Western Highway en route to the Cayo (pronounced Ky-o) District and the impressive Maya site of Xunantunich. Before reaching the entrance of this ancient city, you will be taken across the Mopan River on a 19th century ferry. “El Castillo” (the Castle), is the largest temple at Xunantunich and shows it's dominance by its towering height. From the top of “El Castillo” view the panoramic vistas of the surrounding rainforests in the Cayo District as well as the bordering towns between Belize and Guatemala. Overnight in San Ignacio Town for 2 nights.
Day 5 – Free day / Optional Tours:
Free day to explore Western Belize at your leisure. Optional activities that can be pre-booked or purchased locally include: visit to an ancient Maya city (Caracol, Cahal Pech, Tikal), cave exploration (Barton Creek Caves), horseback riding, and river canoeing.
Day 6 – Cave Tubing & Zipride (L):
Hotel check-out and Embark on 1 hour drive via the Western Highway to Caves Branch Outpost, your adventure headquarters for the day. The Outpost is located a few hundred feet from the Caves Branch River and its winding waterway through the ancient caves once inhabited by the Maya. Become a “Zip rider” today as you connect to a series of overhead cables criss-crossing the rainforest canopy. The zipline course features a “beginner’s zip run” of only 150 feet. Six other zip runs range in length from 200’ to 600’ between treetop platforms secured in the canopy of tropical hardwood trees. Intriguing karst limestone cliffs provide a scenic backdrop as you zip through the rainforest canopy. This zipline course is truly unforgettable and second to none in Central America and the Caribbean. It is fully insured and also certified by Challenge Course Technologies (ACCT).
Your Cave Tubing adventures starts with a jungle trail hike where your guide will point out various plants, roots, and herbs once used by the ancient Maya. The entrance tunnel that heads into the underground cave system is the start of an “eye opening” adventure. Your guide hands out head-lamps, and you are ready to float in inflated inner tubes assisted by gentle currents taking you through the cave system. Intricate crystalline formations line the caves and stalagmites and stalactites add to the serene opulence of nature. Select your lunch from a wide range of buffet items from the “Canopy Café” at Caves Branch Outpost.
It is now time for your return to Belize City where you will connect on a water taxi for just over 1 hour transfer to the quaint seaside village of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye for 2 nights of island ambiance.
Day 7 – Hol Chan Marine Reserve & Shark Ray Alley (EP):
Snorkel the first marine reserve established in Central America - Hol Chan Marine Reserve. Explore the coral reefs as you swim amongst flamboyantly coloured tropical fish. Then head to your second snorkel stop, Shark Ray Alley. Friendly reef fish including snappers and jacks dart in and about graceful stingrays and the inquisitive brown nurse sharks for an experience not to be missed.
Free afternoon to relax on the beach or more fun in the sea and sun!
